Ashok’s fable

We cannot control the wind, but we can adjust the sails.

By 2002, I had been working in the corporate world for 25 years in a variety of roles. In my final job, I was CFO of a publicly traded company that I helped sell. After the deal was done, I had a decision to make: I could have taken up a job as CFO at another company, but instead chose to take control of my own destiny and started a financial advisory firm to leverage the intellectual capital I had built up over the years.

Initially, my clients were old friends and colleagues. Eventually, they became an extension of my family. In fact, several clients were guests at the wedding of my daughter, Anita, and son-in-law, Richard.

Most of my early clients were about my age, and they had children and grandchildren of their own who needed financial advice. Having Anita and later Richard join the firm gave our business continuity for generations. Our clients really appreciate that their children’s financial well-being will remain in good hands.

Taking a holistic approach was a natural progression. We support our clients to make the important things urgent. Creating a will, setting up a family trust, or putting in place a business succession plan are decisions that often get put off. By encouraging them to take these steps, we’ve also become a go-to resource for everything financial. We often get calls asking about mortgages, home and auto insurance, group Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), or employee benefit plans for corporations. We get calls asking, “Should I buy or lease a car?” and asking for recommendations for a specialist. Our clients trust us that much.
